The Joomla! Project is pleased to announce the availability of Joomla! CMS 3.5 Beta 1 . Community members are asked to download and install the package in order to provide quality assurance for the forthcoming 3.5 release.

Joomla! 3 is the latest major release of the Joomla! CMS, with 3.5 the sixth standard-term support release in this series. Please note that going from 3.4 to 3.5 is a one-click upgrade and is NOT a migration. The same is true is for any subsequent versions in the 3 series of the CMS. That being said, please do not upgrade any of your production sites to the beta version as beta is ONLY intended for testing and there is no upgrade path from Beta.

What is this release for?

This is a BETA release, that should only be used on test sites. Beta releases cannot be upgraded.

Extension developers are encouraged to work with this release in order to prepare extensions for the stable release of Joomla! CMS 3.5, though there shouldn't be any backward compatibility issues. Users are encouraged to test the package for issues and to report issues in the Joomla! CMS Issue Tracker. Please do not upgrade any of your production sites to the beta version and do not start a new site on beta as beta is ONLY intended for testing and there is no upgrade path from Beta.

When is the stable release due?

We have revised the launch timeline slightly to ensure we can get everything up to the quality levels we all would like, and to ensure thorough testing on as many hosting environments as possible.

The schedule is now as follows:

  • 17 November beta 2
  • 1 December - Release Candidate
  • 8 December – 3.5 Stable

Please note that dates may be subject to change depending on availability of volunteers and circumstances beyond our control.

What’s new in Joomla 3.5

The big question is, what is new in Joomla 3.5? You can read it in this earlier article. The new routing system will not be merged into the 3.5 release. The routing will be postponed until 3.6 because the work is not complete and has not been tested thoroughly. The production leadership team understands that the change in features can be disruptive and is an inconvenience to the developers expecting new routing we are truly sorry. If you are interested in helping us out on testing the new routing system, please contact Roland Dalmulder at This email address is being protected from spambots. A Joomla 3.4.5 release containing a security fix will be published on Thursday 22nd October at approximately 14:00 UTC. The Joomla security team (JSST) has been informed of a critical security issue in the Joomla core.

Since this is a very important security fix, please be prepared to update your Joomla installations next Thursday. Until the release is out, please understand that we cannot provide any further information.

Many users are always looking forward to a new version of their favorite software because it could bring them new shiny things to play with. Many website maintainers are less fond of new versions as they wonder what will break this time round. As a software developing and using community we believe the responsibility is in all our hands and not just of those creating the release. We ask for your active participation in testing all 3.5 pre-releases. This will ensure we can move smoothly to this new version.

Release Leader

The PLT is pleased to announce Roland Dalmulder as the Joomla 3.5 release leader. The release leader works to encourage contributions for a particular release, drive attention to the patches needing to be tested, and ensuring that the features identified by Joomla on the roadmap for that particular release are addressed by volunteers eager to get involved.

Features

The big question is, what is new in Joomla 3.5? We have the following possible features:

Update emails plugin by Nicholas Dionysopoulos

https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/pull/6886

Joomla! issues bug fix and security updates every few weeks. However, many (most?) of its users are completely unaware of this fact unless they log in to the back-end of their site and notice the update nag message at the top. This PR adds a plugin which periodically checks for updated Joomla! versions and, when one is found, emails the Super Users of the site to remind them.

#joomla

This is of course the best know hashtag, you can use this #hashtag in all tweets about #joomla.

#howtojoomla en #how2joomla

Origanally started by @ostraining and later by @techjoomla. This #hashtag is inspired by the Magento community who use #howtomage. This #hashtag can be used if you have questions about #Joomla.

Joomla has great plans for the future of the CMS. Below are a few of the ideas which have been raised for upcoming releases. When writing a revised roadmap we started by determining what we hoped to accomplish.

Light Core and Core Supported Extensions

Based on feedback the concept of a light core for the Joomla CMS was established. The next step was determining how to achieve a light core and what parts were necessary in this light core version. Obviously there are many opinions on how a light core should be realized, what should be included, and what should be removed. We determined a list of core components which should remain within the CMS and a list of components which could legitimately be removed from core and added to a ‘core supported’ extension category.
